Calcio Storico is, perhaps, one of the most popular events to be held in June, more precisely on the 24th. The manifestation consists of four teams representing four neighborhoods of Florence (Santa Croce, Santo Spirito, Santa Maria Novella and San Giovanni) that vie with each other in Piazza Santa Croce in a football-like competition, though the game as such is a peculiar combination of football, rugby and fighting.

At the same time, players are dressed in Renaissance costumes, a habit which suggests the old origins of the event, and the nowadays prize consists of a huge steak, though originally it was represented by a white calf also meant to be turned into large portions of steaks. Tourists should keep in mind that Calcio Storico is part of the Festival of Saint John, the saint patron of the city. The festival has an obvious religious dimension, but the spectacular side of the event resides in the popular manifestations of the Florentines, of which Calcio Storico is the most appealing of all, though one should not be surprised to see a much more abundant plethora of manifestations: boat races, processions of people dressed in historic costumes, fireworks shows.
